U.S. Sen. Mark Kelly Visits Southwest Early College Academy
SAN LUIS, Ariz. — U.S. Sen. Mark Kelly visited Southwest Early College Academy, part of Gadsden Elementary School District No. 32, on Monday to engage with students, explore the school's innovative academic programs and learn how science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education is helping prepare students for college and future careers.
Senator Kelly, a former NASA astronaut and U.S. Navy pilot, received a warm welcome from Principal Luis Reyes and members of the National Junior Honor Society. The visit included a presentation of the colors by the school's Color Guard, followed by a campus tour where Kelly viewed student artwork and spoke with students about their educational experiences and aspirations.
A highlight of the visit was Kelly's participation in an interactive science and mathematics activity, where he engaged with students and teachers. The classroom visit showcased the district's Early College Program, which provides students with advanced academic opportunities, including the ability to earn college credits while still in middle school. Students also had the opportunity to ask Kelly questions about STEM education, space exploration, leadership and his experiences as an astronaut and U.S. senator.
During his visit, Kelly also congratulated Southwest Early College Academy on being named among the top 10 schools worldwide in the Overcoming Adversity category of T4 Education's 2026 World's Best School Prizes. The international recognition celebrates the school's efforts to overcome challenges and expand educational opportunities, reflecting the dedication and achievements of its students and educators.
“Having Sen. Kelly visit our school and interact directly with our students is an incredible opportunity,” said Southwest Early College Academy Principal Luis Reyes. “Experiences like this help our students recognize the connection between what they are learning today and what they can accomplish in the future.”
“Sen. Kelly's visit brings attention to the importance of STEM education and early college preparation,” said Superintendent Lizette Esparza. “At Gadsden, we are expanding these opportunities to equip students with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in college and future careers.”
“We were honored to welcome Sen. Kelly to our school and share our students' accomplishments with him,” said Governing Board President Tadeo A. De La Hoya. “His visit was an opportunity to showcase the incredible talent and potential of our students, the dedication of our educators and the great things happening in our San Luis community.”
The visit concluded with a gathering in the school library, where Kelly met with faculty, staff and Parent Teacher Organization representatives to learn more about the school's educational initiatives and community partnerships. The gathering offered a final opportunity to share how educators, families and community partners work together to support student success and strengthen the educational experience at Southwest Early College Academy.
